Where Do Gays Go to Retire?

As retirement gets closer in time for us, I often wonder where is the best place for gays to retire?
We all think of a place to retire which is affordable, has lower taxes as compared to what you pay now, and a great climate.
I don’t want to give my money to a state that doesn’t recognize same sex marriage.  Where do we go?  California? New Mexico?  Even though marriage is now recognized by the Federal Government, there are states like Florida which doesn’t have marriage equality.  Why should I give my money to a state that doesn’t recognize us?
We have been to San Diego twice, and fell in love with it.  Although a conservative city as compared to San Francisco, it has a large gay presence. Hillcrest is an area where there are an abundance of gay flags, bars, shops, and community. I feel very comfortable walking down the street and holding hands with my husband.
The weather is perfect! 72 degrees is the yearly average temperature.  You can’t beat that! The beaches are beautiful, and it’s only a few hours to Palm Springs, or LA.

The only caveat is that San Diego is expensive.  Just as expensive as living here in Stamford, CT. High taxes, and high real estate prices.
Sometimes you have to pay the price to be happy.
Years ago after visiting Ft Lauderdale/Wilton Manors we thought that we’d be comfortable living there.  Actually, after being there a few times, we decided against it.

Here’s why:
1) We don’t want to live in a gay ghetto.  Living among other gays are great, but we want to live in a diverse community.
2) The summer months are too hot and humid.
3) I want to be active throughout retirement, and don’t want the highlight of the day to be which restaurant we chose for an early bird special.
4) I can do without alligators, and huge insects, and hurricanes.
I do like:
1) No Taxes
2) Affordable Real Estate
Palm Springs and surrounding area was another place we thought of.  The summers are extremely hot, usually 110+ degrees.
San Francisco is also expensive, and much cooler than San Diego.
So the search continues.  We have at least 5 years to retirement and will continue to find the best place to retire.
